A Solitary Way

I thought to pass a solitary way,

Hermitic, self-sufficient, shadow-cloaked,

Content to glimpse a dim, reflected light:

Emerging, now and then, with cautious mien

To sip weak energy of lesser stars

With delicate intent, as invalids,

Long illness past, take first slow steps, then must

Retreat to bed.  Then came a light too bright

For shadows, warmer than my native orb,

And with it air, the freshest I had breathed;

And food, and drink, the finest I had known.

Thus years of solitude away as dust

Were blown.  Abundant sunshine, endless day

Are mine -- for while he lives, there is no night.
