In later years, they had a ritual.
After they went to bed, but before they went to sleep.
They lay down together, looked into each other's eyes, and asked a simple question.
"If tonight was your last night, or if tomorrow was your last day... where would you like to be?"
They always answered, "Nowhere but here."
Kirk's last day came and went.
That night, Spock lay down alone, and looked at the other pillow.
He asked the question to himself and the empty air.
"Wherever you are," he answered.
He realized then that that had always been the answer.
