"Closer to you than anyone in the universe?" Spock asked, once Jim was back in his own skin.

"Yes." Jim nodded solemnly. "For years, even." He took Spock's hand. "You held my hand in front of Security--though--I'm not sure that they noticed."

"I believed it necessary to indicate my loyalty to you, and our solidarity against adversity."

"I understood. I don't know what I'd have done if you didn't believe me."

"By the way, Miss Chapel also knows."

"Why?"

"'That very kind Mr. Spock'," Spock quoted to him. "She reported that you made 'cow eyes' at my name."
